At the Ceres Community Garden 200 youth from 45 schools and foster youth programs learn all aspects of caring for the soil, planting, tending, harvesting and composting. The 3,000 pounds of organic food and 1,500 bouquets of flowers that they raise are used by the teens to prepare 67,000 free, delicious and nourishing whole foods meals for low-income community members dealing with a serious illness like cancer.
This soil to table to community project educates teens, clients and the whole community about the vital importance of a local, organic and whole foods diet. Teens in the program increase vegetable consumption by 20%, reduce fast food consumption by 65% and are 50% more likely to encourage their friends and family to make healthier choices. The garden connects teens to better health but most importantly to their power to make a life-changing and sometimes even life-saving difference for others.
