growing tomorrow’s leaders

a nutiva foundation program to empower youth

At Nutiva, we support several youth-leadership focused nonprofits through the Nutiva Foundation. These nonprofits create meaningful experiences for youth and at the same time teach important life and job skills. As a result of participating in the programs, these young people gain confidence, knowledge and leadership skills, while embracing healthier and more socially and environmentally conscious lifestyles.

Working with high school age youth from schools and group homes in the greater Bay Area, CERES Community Project provides healthy organic meals to nurture the seriously ill, including cancer patients. Too often, those in medical crisis can’t afford to prepare the nutritious meals they need. CERES Community Project fulfills this need, while teaching teens how to garden, cook and plan meals, and discover the deep satisfaction of giving to others. While addressing the epidemic of chronic disease and its relationship to food, teens end up improving their own eating habits. CERES Community Project estimates that both clients and teens will eat around 4 million additional servings of fruit and vegetables over ten years.

YES offers underserved youth and families in West Contra Costa County the restorative benefits of connecting to nature. YES has sent 4,300 youth to week-long, sleep away summer camp and hosted 750 youth along with their families at weekend camps. Health and wellness, personal values, safety, and respect across cultures are just some of the fundamentals they learn. Over 65% of participants sign up for other YES programs, demonstrating that YES gives them a sense of purpose and involvement, and in doing so primes them to become leaders for social change in their own families and communities.

Ashoka’s Catapult program provides the nation’s promising young entrepreneurs access to mentorship and learning, as well as connections to a global network across 70 countries. We provide human capital to the Catapult program, in hopes of sharing the message of corporate social responsibility at a formative stage of these young leader’s careers. We highlight B Corp certification and donating 1% of sales as models of using business to do good. With hope, these young people could become the next innovators in designing our future food system.

Obtaining strong skills and social connections are among the most important determining factors for our health and success. The nonprofits that we support provide youth the opportunities for enriching experiences that enhance their chance for success. They accomplish this through heart-centered community interactions, job and life skills, connecting with nature, or career networking. These experiences support the youth of today to become tomorrow’s leaders.
